At TeamHealth, our mission is to deliver exceptional care during life’s pivotal moments. In emergency medicine, those moments often arrive without warning—demanding equal measures of skill, courage, and compassion.

One such moment came when Dr. Charles Budzyn, an emergency medicine resident, was faced with a parent rushing through the doors of a freestanding emergency department, carrying an unresponsive child.

“If you’ve ever heard the guttural yell of a parent when their child is in danger, you don’t forget it,” Dr. Budzyn said. “It’s the kind of sound that makes you drop everything and run.”

Without hesitation, he took the child in his arms and sprinted to the trauma room. A quick check revealed no pulse. He began chest compressions as the team mobilized around him. Within moments, the child’s pulse returned—but the danger was far from over.

Dr. Daniel Cobau, the attending physician on duty, arrived as the team worked to stabilize the child. “When I got there, we had a heartbeat back, but the child was in severe distress,” he recalled. “We didn’t know why yet. That’s one of the hardest parts—you’re trying to put together the pieces in real time, and there’s no room for error.”

Together, the team worked methodically, supporting breathing, monitoring responses, and running through possible causes. The setting made the stakes even higher: a freestanding emergency department, where rapid stabilization and quick coordination for transfer are essential.

What both clinicians remember most is the seamless teamwork. “It was all hands on deck,” said Dr. Budzyn. “Every nurse, every physician, every staff member knew their role. In moments like that, hesitation isn’t an option.”

For Dr. Cobau, the case reinforced a lesson every emergency clinician learns early: preparation saves lives. “In an emergency, seconds matter,” he said. “You have to know exactly where critical equipment is—especially pediatric airways and resuscitation tools. It’s not enough to have a general idea. You need to be able to reach for it instinctively.”

Both clinicians noted how pediatric cases add another layer of intensity. “The stakes feel even higher,” said Dr. Cobau. “Every life matters, but when it’s a child, the weight is heavier. Tools like the Broselow tape are lifesavers because they take away the guesswork on equipment and medications in a high-pressure moment.”

When the child was stabilized and transferred safely, the tension lifted. For both doctors, the night left an imprint.

“This is why we do it,” said Dr. Budzyn. “To be there for families in their worst moments, and to make a difference.”

Dr. Cobau agreed. “It’s terrifying in the moment, but when you see the outcome, it’s the most rewarding part of our work. It’s exactly why we chose this field.”

This story is part of Moments That Matter, a series that highlights the courage, skill, and compassion of TeamHealth clinicians as they live out our mission. Find more stories about moments like these.

Prioritizing Resident Wellbeing and Suicide Prevention https://www.teamhealth.com/featured-article/prioritizing-resident-wellbeing-and-suicide-prevention/ Fri, 12 Sep 2025 21:47:39 +0000 https://www.teamhealth.com/?p=79635 The post Prioritizing Resident Wellbeing and Suicide Prevention appeared first on TeamHealth.

Katie Coffey, Director of Recruitment, Corporate Recruiting, Residency & National Recruiting Events

Suicide prevention is an incredibly important topic in healthcare, and it’s one that hits close to home for many of us at TeamHealth. The stress of medical training is unique – demanding schedules, intense training, and the constant challenge of adapting to new teams creates a complex environment. On top of that, residents often struggle to balance their roles as physicians-in-training with their roles as peers, partners, and friends.

At TeamHealth, we recognize the weight of these challenges and the importance of supporting residents not only in their professional growth but also in their personal wellbeing. Our Residency Relations team is dedicated to promoting resident wellness by putting words into action. We create opportunities for residents to step outside of the clinical environment and connect with colleagues in meaningful ways – whether through outdoor activities, sporting events, or volunteer work. These moments of connection are more than just a break from training; they’re a reminder that residents are not alone, and that community is an essential part of resilience.

This work is deeply personal to us. Every member of our team has been touched in some way by the loss of a resident to suicide – either through someone they’ve known personally or through programs that have endured that heartbreak. It’s why we are so passionate about continuing the conversation around wellness, suicide prevention, and awareness. We know that everyone struggles at times, and we encourage residents to take small steps each day that bring joy, fulfillment, and balance. We strive to keep these conversations going so that they become a core part of our team culture.

We also know that stigma continues to keep many clinicians from seeking the help they need. Fear of judgment or negative consequences remains a powerful barrier. Together, we are breaking that stigma. TeamHealth is committed to dropping the walls around this topic by providing resources and support for mental health, suicide prevention, and more. We hear you, we see you, and we support you.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. You are not alone. call or text the 24/7 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: 988 (Languages: English, Spanish).

Sheleigh Highsmith, PMHNP-BC, Regional Clinical Director, Post-Acute Care Behavioral Health

As we begin our focus on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month, members of the Post-Acute Care Behavioral Health team discuss how the disorder affects older adults. Jessica Stone, MSN, PMHNP-BC, Regional Clinical Director, and Sheleigh Highsmith, PMHNP-BC, Regional Clinical Director, explain how to recognize symptoms in the elderly and address them. PTSD in older adults is often overlooked or misunderstood, yet it can significantly impact quality of life, especially when compounded by isolation, medical complexity, or cognitive decline. By raising awareness and sharing expert guidance, our team reinforces TeamHealth’s mission to deliver exceptional care during life’s pivotal moments—supporting older adults with the compassion, clinical excellence, and dignity they deserve.

Understanding PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Although it is often associated with combat veterans, PTSD can affect anyone who has endured severe stress, including the elderly. An estimated 3.9% of the world population has had PTSD at some stage in their lives according to the World Health Organization. PTSD symptoms may increase with age due to multiple factors including role changes, functional losses and maladaptive behaviors to cope with loss.

Barriers to Effective Assessment and Treatment

Older adults are less likely to report symptoms associated with trauma such as depression or anxiety, due to an inability to connect emotional syndromes manifesting as somatic complaints. There is also a perceived stigma among this population of “seeming crazy” making it particularly difficult for primary care providers to detect trauma symptoms of the elderly compared to younger counterparts. Consequently, this may result in inadequate treatment plans, provision of poorly focused or inappropriate treatment and poor patient outcomes.

An Overview of Trauma-Informed Care

Patients in the long-term care setting face an elevated risk of trauma-related challenges, which are often significantly under recognized in this population. Implementing trauma-informed care is crucial. This framework acknowledges trauma’s impact on patients and guides healthcare providers in their interactions. It involves identifying trauma symptoms, implementing informed policies, practices, and procedures, and actively working to reduce the risk of re-traumatizing patients.

Effective November 28, 2019, trauma-informed care became a focal point in the survey process for nursing and skilled nursing facilities as CMS completed the final stage of revised participation requirements for Medicaid and Medicare. New trauma-informed care regulations include:

  • F699: Trauma-informed care (quality of care)
  • F659: Comprehensive care plans/qualified persons
  • F741: Sufficient/competent staff for behavioral health needs
  • F949: Behavioral health training
Applying the Principles of Trauma-Informed Care

Implementing trauma-informed care in long-term care settings involves several key strategies. These strategies include staff training to recognize and respond to signs of trauma, creating a safe and supportive environment and the development of personalized care plans.

The Trauma-Informed Care assessment should be conducted on all residents by a facility staff member. If any positive responses are identified during the assessment, a referral to a Behavioral Health provider for further evaluation and treatment is required. This evaluation may reveal the need for a specialized treatment plan. Additionally, regular interdisciplinary team meetings can continue to help in identifying and mitigating potential triggers, and improve communication among the treatment team, residents, and families.

By incorporating these practices, facilities can ensure that they meet the CMS trauma-informed care regulations and improve quality care to their residents while also fostering a supportive and understanding environment.

Our behavioral health program includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and psychologists who work closely with facility staff to understand and assess each treatment plan for conditions like PTSD and others that affect the elderly population. Please get in touch with our team to learn more about partnering with us.

At TeamHealth, we deliver exceptional care during life’s pivotal moments—and some of those moments are invisible to the eye. This PTSD Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Often associated with combat veterans, PTSD actually touches people from all walks of life. Recognizing this truth is essential to delivering truly compassionate and effective care.

Recognizing PTSD in Diverse Populations

PTSD can affect any individual who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. This includes survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, childhood abuse, natural disasters, or severe accidents, who often bear emotional scars long after the incidents. Healthcare professionals, particularly those who were on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic, may experience secondary trauma or prolonged stress. Additionally, first responders, caregivers, and residents of long-term care facilities who have faced significant loss, isolation, or disruptions in routine may also develop PTSD.

Symptoms of PTSD can vary and include flashbacks, anxiety, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, and withdrawal. These symptoms can significantly impact quality of life, relationships, and the ability to feel safe and connected. In many healthcare settings, these signs are often overlooked or misunderstood, especially in environments where mental health stigma hinders individuals from seeking help.

Mental Health is Foundational

During this month—and every month—we reaffirm that mental health care is not optional; it is foundational. PTSD is not an indication of weakness; it is a natural human response to overwhelming experiences. With understanding, support, and timely intervention, healing is achievable.

As we observe PTSD Awareness Month, we remain committed to our mission by recognizing that exceptional care involves seeing the whole person—past, present, and future. For those living with PTSD, your story matters, your healing matters, and you are not alone. We are here to support you during life’s pivotal moments—and beyond.

Empathy in Action

At TeamHealth, our Behavioral Health service line exists to meet those moments with presence, expertise, and empathy. We provide integrated mental health support across care settings—from hospitals to skilled nursing facilities—partnering with staff to support patients, residents, and caregivers alike. Our clinicians meet people where they are, helping them navigate the complex emotional impact of trauma with dignity and trust.

At TeamHealth, our mission is to deliver exceptional care during life’s pivotal moments—and our advanced practice clinicians (APCs) play a vital role in making that mission a reality. With deep clinical expertise and compassionate leadership, APCs help drive quality, innovation, and patient-centered care across our organization. The Advanced Practice Clinician Council (APCC) was created to ensure these valued team members are represented, supported, and empowered at every level. Following the APCC’s recent annual meeting, we’re proud to introduce Chris Waybright as the new Council Chair. A respected clinical leader with a focus on elevating APC voices, Chris will lead the council as it continues to strengthen the voice and impact of APCs across TeamHealth.

Meet the new council chair

Hi! My name is Chris Waybright, and I am honored to serve as the Chair of the APCC. As a nurse practitioner and passionate advocate for APCs, I am proud to lead this council as we continue to build on a strong foundation of representation, advocacy, and progress for all APCs within TeamHealth.

What is the history and mission of the Advanced Practice Clinician Council (APCC)?

Formed in 2012, under the direction of TeamHealth Co-Founder and President of Practice Development, Dr. Randal Dabbs, the APCC has played a vital role in ensuring that APCs are fully integrated into the clinical, operational, and strategic fabric of TeamHealth. From its inception, the council has remained steadfast in its mission to guide resource development, influence policy and practice, and elevate the voice of APCs throughout the enterprise. The APCC has spearheaded many initiatives that have differentiated TeamHealth as a destination of choice for APCs nationally.

What are the APCC’s goals and focus areas for the coming year?

This year, we will focus on strengthening collaboration with strategic internal stakeholders to expand the reach and impact of APCs in new and innovative ways. We aim to create clearer pathways for practice integration, both within TeamHealth and through external partnerships, address staffing needs, and provide sustainable solutions for future growth. These efforts will help optimize our clinical teams, improve patient outcomes, and further support our clinical mission.

How does TeamHealth support and value its advanced practice clinicians?

I am proud of the inclusive and collaborative culture TeamHealth has cultivated—one that values the expertise, compassion, and leadership that APCs bring to their patients, communities, and teams. Our APCs are invaluable team members and are represented at multiple levels of the organization. TeamHealth has put strategic focus on resource development to further support APC practice, including post-graduate fellowship programs, advanced procedural skills programs, and orientation programs, to name a few. Although there is always work to do, these resources and professional growth pathways are a meaningful reflection of the value TeamHealth sees in APCs.

What are you looking forward to for the council this year?

As Chair, I am committed to ensuring our culture continues to reflect the incredible contributions of every APC across the organization. The APCs at TeamHealth are making meaningful impacts on the lives of patients, the communities they live in, and the next generation of clinicians. These achievements could not be accomplished without a culture of support for APCs and their practice.  I look forward to leading innovative programs and communication that set TeamHealth apart as the premier organization for APCs to spend their careers.

Advancing APC Leadership and Impact

As we look ahead, the work of the APCC remains essential to advancing TeamHealth’s commitment to clinical excellence, collaboration, and inclusion. The council will continue to champion the growth, recognition, and integration of advanced practice clinicians across all settings. Together, we will strengthen the future of care by ensuring every APC is empowered to lead, supported to thrive, and recognized for the vital role they play in delivering exceptional care during life’s pivotal moments.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to the meaningful and impactful year ahead!
